My Favorite Veteran: Enlistment Pg 2

This blog is a continuation of the enlistment record for my Dad, James Paul Seletyn.

As stated in the blog covering page one of his enlistment report, I requested (and received) these documents from the National Archives using this link: (https://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records)

I will now cover page two of his enlistment report, pictured here:

On the second page, Dad swears:

  • I HAVE NEVER engaged in disloyal or subversive activities defined therein.
  • I AM NOT now drawing retired pay from the government of the United States.
  • I AM NOT now drawing a pension, disability allowance or disability compensation from the government of the United States.

The U.S. government hates double dippers. I ran into an insurance issue once with the VA for Dad and it had to do with being paid by two different government agencies.

Dad gave his oath of allegiance at Baltimore, Maryland on 6 Jan 61 to Wendell M Wampler. I only know what that signature translates to because of the typed line at the very bottom of the page.

Remarks by enlisting officer:

Enlistment Credit – Floyd Mann S/Sgt AF 13 427 7333

Enlisted for aptitude area – Mech Gp II

AQE-D, A 55, M 50, G40, E40

Date DD Form 53 Forwarded: 6 Jan 1961

I could not find any data on Floyd Mann, but I will keep looking.

Dad’s aptitude area was mechanical. He became an Air Force mechanic, specializing in the F101 Voodoo. He would also receive extensive training in ejection seats.

Verified at Baltimore, Maryland. Grade and Organization of Enlisting Officer: Wendell M Wampler, Capt USAF USARMS, Balto MD.

A couple of searches later and I have this info on Wampler:

STATE OF Maryland; CITY, TOWN, OR MILITARY POST Baltimore

I, JAMES PAUL SELETYN do hereby acknowledge to have voluntarily enlisted, under the conditions prescribed by law, this 6th day of JANUARY, 1961, in the UNITED STATES AIR FORCE for a period of FOUR (4) years unless sooner discharged by proper authority; and I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the United States of America, that I will serve them honestly and faithfully against all their enemies whomsoever; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States, and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to the regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

SIGNATURE (First name, middle name, last name): James Paul Seletyn

The above oath was subscribed and duly sworn to before me this 6th day of January 1961. This enlistee was minutely inspected by me prior to subscribing to the oath, and was found to be entirely sober and in full possession of all mental faculties. To the best of my judgment and belief enlistee fulfills all legal requirements, and in enlisting this applicant I have strictly observed the regulations governing such enlistment. The above oath, as filled in, was read to the applicant prior to subscribing thereto. WENDELL M WAMPLER CAPT USAF USARMS, Balto, Md

Last item is the fingerprints of his right hand. There is nothing more personal than that.

There are a few things I am still researching regarding this page. Primarily the testing protocols and procedures and how Dad’s scores fell within the set parameters.
